Here’s a story of one of the patient of yesterday: A woman 65 years of age, no food to eat and visually tiered and sad was telling us how the peoples around and in her house (her own family) treat her like she has leprosy, outcast and shouting at her. The problem here is that AIDS is still a disease of shame, very much a STIGMA> that no one want to be associated with. So most of the peoples who are HIV denied it and act has if they are not infected… it is very strange and horrible… and it doesn’t help at all anyone and it encourage the spreading of the disease even more… SILENCE (HIDING)=DEATH… People are afraid to go to hospital or to be seen at our clinic. Aids/HIV has no gender, age or sexual orientation here or everywhere else, but here it is quite obvious!!! Everyone is in contact somehow with someone who is infected. Yet people are acting like we were out west in the 80’s, afraid of catching it even from a handshake and yet denying that their husbands can infect them!!! There is so much ignorance about the disease that it makes the all epidemic much worse! And forget about SAFE SEX, no one here is in to it!
